Thelonious 4 was founded with the goal of Interpreting the compositions of Thelonious Monk in a truly unique and interesting manner. Based in Amsterdam, Thelonious 4 hosts a international line up including Iman Spaargaren from the Netherlands (saxes/clarinets), the Argentinian Guillermo Celano (guitar/effects), German bass player Andreas Metzler (double bass) and also from the Netherlands: Jurjen Bakker (drums).
With the release of their first album in 2008 titled simply “Thelonious 4”, one can already hear a shared vision of swing, taste and execution. Coming from different musical backgrounds the band members always reach for the highest level of expression. The energy and musical adventure leave you in astonishment! Monk’s compositions are being torn apart, closely examined, and put together in a different fashion again. True swing, soundscapes, burning improvisations and witty interplay.
In 2011 Thelonious4 released its 2nd cd: ‘Live at the Hot House’, recorded live in concert at the the Hot House club in Leiden, The Netherlands. In 2012 Thelonious 4 invited vibraphone player Tony Miceli (U.S.A.) to join the group for a European tour and record a new album to be released in 2013 on ew York based label Dot Time records.
Thelonious4 approaches the traditional quartet format from a new perspective, creating a unique ensemble sound. The blend of tenor saxophone and electric jazz guitar backed by a steady and highly creative rhythm section is a beguiling one, and this Amsterdam based jazzquartet exploits it with great skill.
