OX Trio, his newest album, contains Oscar Del Barba’s original compositions. The songs arise from the synergy between contemporary music and modern jazz, between contrapuntist writing and great rhythmic research. The dialogue between composition and improvisation is very narrow and subtle at the same time, and gives shape to a now ethereal and spacious sound (where the harmonic element prevails), now dense and energetic (where the rhythm is in the foreground). Strongly stratified and in which the roles of musicians alternate in an unusual way for a formation -like the “piano trio”- so important in the tradition of African-American music.
Autoritratto is the second album from Oscar Del Barba on Dot Time Records. This album presents Oscar alone with his instrument in a solo piano outing. The album features 10 original tracks, both through-composed and improvised. Musically, this album straddles the boundaries of Classical and Jazz with elements of minimal music while at the same time never straying far from the Jazz tradition. Oscar’s performance is immaculate throughout, showing his full control of technique. This album would be at home in any piano lover’s collection no matter what your favorite music style is.
In ‘Two Suits For Jazz Orchestra’, Featuring: Dave Liebman Oscar Del Barba has been released from the Jazz Big Band witness protection program, or so it seems. This award winning Italian composition master is a name which jazz supporters will have to take note of. Filled with melodic hues and shades, Del Barba has approached a range of musical genres (Jazz, Cuban, Argentinean, Brazilian music) which, together with his classical thoughts, have given rise to an original personal style influencing his compositions as well as his improvisation.
